O4SURE Joins Global Discussion on Ocean Data for Sustainable Fisheries Management

EO4SURE participated in the international workshop “Ocean Data to Support Global Sustainable Fisheries Management”, held on 21–22 April 2026 in a hybrid format at the North-East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) headquarters in London. Organised by GEO Blue Planet, the workshop brought together fisheries scientists, Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs), policymakers and technical experts to explore how ocean data can better support sustainable fisheries management and decision-making.

The workshop focused on identifying the operational needs of Regional Fisheries Management Organizations, promoting the uptake of ocean observations in fisheries management, and developing a collaborative roadmap for the wider adoption of Earth Observation and ocean data services.

During the session on Showcasing and Knowledge Transfer, Pedro Ribeiro (INDRA) delivered an online presentation entitled “Monitoring Indicators for Fisheries in Small Island Developing States (SIDS)”. The presentation introduced EO4SURE’s approach to developing operational Earth Observation products to support the monitoring of fisheries-related Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicators, with a particular focus on the challenges faced by Small Island Developing States.

EO4SURE’s participation highlighted the project’s contribution to advancing the use of satellite observations and Automatic Identification System (AIS) data for fisheries monitoring and SDG reporting. It also reinforced the project’s engagement with the international fisheries community and its commitment to developing solutions that respond to the needs of fisheries management organisations and national authorities.
