EO4SURE Showcased Earth Observation Solutions for SDG Monitoring at StatEO26

EO4SURE participated in StatEO26, held from 5–7 May 2026 at ESA-ESRIN in Frascati, Italy, where the project presented three scientific posters highlighting its progress in developing operational Earth Observation (EO) solutions to support the monitoring and reporting of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

StatEO26 brought together experts from the Earth Observation, official statistics and policy communities to explore how EO data can strengthen national statistical systems and support evidence-based decision-making. The conference provided an excellent opportunity to exchange experiences with international stakeholders and showcase EO4SURE’s work on translating satellite observations into operational SDG indicators.

The project presented the following posters:

  • Operational reporting of SDG 14.1.1 indicator in Portugal and Cabo Verde based on CMEMS data, presented by Pedro Ribeiro (INDRA).
  • Tackling the challenge of monitoring SDG indicators for fisheries in Small Island Developing States (SIDS), presented by Pedro Ribeiro (INDRA).
  • Monitoring of SDG 6 indicators in Portugal and Denmark with EO-based algorithms, presented by Walid Ghariani (DHI).

Together, the three contributions illustrated EO4SURE’s work across its pilot countries and demonstrated how Earth Observation can support operational SDG reporting in different environmental domains. The posters addressed methodologies for monitoring coastal eutrophication (SDG 14.1.1), sustainable fisheries (SDGs 14.4.1 and 14.7.1), and water-related ecosystems (SDG 6), highlighting the integration of satellite observations with national data and statistical frameworks.

EO4SURE’s participation at StatEO26 reinforced the project’s commitment to bridging the gap between Earth Observation technologies and official statistics, while strengthening collaboration with the international EO and SDG communities. The event also provided an opportunity to engage with researchers, statistical offices, space agencies and policy organisations working to advance the operational use of EO for sustainable development monitoring.
