EO4SURE Supports São Tomé and Príncipe in Strengthening SDG Reporting for Fisheries

On September 4, 2025, the EO4SURE project held a national Living Lab session in Lisbon dedicated to SDG 14.1 on marine pollution, with a particular focus on SDG Indicator 14.1.1 (coastal eutrophication). Hosted at Indra Deimos headquarters, the meeting brought together key Portuguese institutions, including the Directorate-General for Maritime Policy (DGPM), the National Statistics Institute of Portugal (INE), and the AIR Centre.

The meeting brought together representatives from the Directorate of Fisheries, the National Institute of Meteorology (INM), and other national stakeholders. Discussions focused on key priorities such as tracking industrial and artisanal fishing activity, integrating satellite-based insights, and strengthening reporting on SDG indicators 14.4.1 (sustainable fish stocks) and 14.7.1 (contribution of fisheries to GDP).

The EO4SURE team presented initial ideas for tools to monitor fishing effort, identify productivity zones, and assess spatial risks, particularly in areas affected by strong ocean currents or seasonal variability. Participants highlighted the importance of improving data availability and local capacity, including access to AIS signals, the use of remote sensing for environmental context, and the need for training and infrastructure.

This Living Lab marked an important step in aligning EO4SURE’s technical development with the country’s fisheries priorities, helping ensure the solutions respond to national needs and can support evidence-based marine management and policy.
