EO4SURE (Earth Observation for Sustainable Use of Resources) is an innovative international project that aims to harness the power of satellite-based Earth Observation (EO) to support countries in monitoring and reporting on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By developing operational, cloud-based EO data pipelines, the project enables the production of timely, accurate, and disaggregated national statistics, particularly for SDG indicators that are traditionally difficult to measure due to data scarcity or limited ground-based monitoring.
EO4SURE focuses on selected SDG indicators under three key goals:
The project follows a co-design approach
working closely with national stakeholders—such as statistical offices, ministries, and research institutions—to ensure that the EO-based solutions respond directly to local needs and contexts. EO4SURE also promotes capacity building, transparency, and the long-term sustainability of results by using open data, open-source tools, and FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable).
EO4SURE PROJECT
plays a strategic role in bridging the gap between EO science and sustainable development policy
Key project activities include:
The development of six end-to-end EO data pipelinescy
Implementation of cloud computing services to automate processing and ensure scalability
Integration of satellite data (mainly from Copernicus Sentinel missions), in situ data, and AI-based analytics
Capacity building through workshops, technical training, and the establishment of Living Labs
Demonstration and operationalization of solutions in pilot countries with diverse geographic and socio-economic profiles
EO4SURE plays a strategic role in bridging the gap between EO science and sustainable development policy by transforming complex geospatial data into actionable national statistics.
The project is funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) through the EO for Sustainable Development (EO4SD) programme. This initiative aims to foster the use of Earth Observation to support the implementation, monitoring, and reporting of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
